  5.     The Bush Administration and many economists contend that the
  6. long economic downturn is coming to an end, but with a recovery
  7. like this, who needs a recession? Statistics released last week
  8. indicate that if a turnaround has begun, it has done so with
  9. remarkable subtlety:

  11.     -- The government's revised estimate of economic output
  12. during the second quarter showed a 0.5% drop, the third
  13. consecutive decline.
  14.  
  15.     -- Sales of existing single-family homes fell 2.1% in
  16. August compared with July.
  17.  
  18.     -- Consumer confidence was down for the third month in a
  19. row, according to the Conference Board, a research group.
  20.  
  21.     -- The number of workers applying for initial unemployment
  22. benefits rose to 439,000 for the week ending Sept. 14, up from
  23. 403,000 the previous week.
  24.  
  25.     -- Monthly orders for durable goods fell 3.8% in August.
  26.  
  27.     Conclusion: America still considers this a recovery that
  28. only a President could love.
